Falling

by flutterflies   Jan 5, 2009

Running through the darkness,
Must escape from here,
Find someplace to hide,
My ragged breath all I hear.

Tripping as I go,
I stumble on and on,
I've been running for hours,
At least it feels that long.

Hear my heart beat faster,
Feel my cheeks burn red,
Must keep going,
Or I'll soon be dead.

This place is full of dangers,
Hidden rocks and snags,
Branches rip my clothes,
Turning them to rags.

Look over my shoulder,
Here they come,
They're getting closer,
Looks like I'm done.

Can't stop now,
I've come this far,
Must keep running,
Past the broken bar.

No time to read,
The yellow sign,
I've no idea,
This place was a mine.

The cliff has been,
Blasted away,
In search of gold,
On a previous day.

Looking over my shoulder,
One last time,
I step over the edge,
And fall like a dime.

Falling feels like flying,
Until you hit the ground,
This is what I learnt,
This is what I found.

Plummeting down,
Eyes sting, knees bend,
Ground rushes up to meet me,
This is the end.
