Survival Of A Wartime Poppy [Collab with A Porcelain Heart]

by Krista   Jan 15, 2009

It's the early nineteen hundreds.
The world is about to plummet.
But amidst the chaos, two young
Lovers promise, their love, to commit.

Then their life is torn to pieces,
She meets his weary eyes with the news,
A baby on the way, and him off to war.
But apart, their love they'll not lose.

He promises with all his heart,
That he'll be okay, he'll survive.
"When I return we shall marry,
And together, raise our child."

So they hold eachother tight,
Praying to God for no more pain.
Tear filled eyes surround this mess,
But a new life, they will gain.

Days and weeks pass by slowly,
Precious telegrams secure the hope,
And words of eternal love in absence,
Give them the strength they need to cope.

And her face is all a glow,
As in her, grows a baby girl.
Only one week before he returns,
But a new letter shatters her world...

Black words engulf her fragile body,
Words that finalize her lover's death.
Killed in combat, the news sends
Her into labor, she bleeds with every breath.

Finally, the baby makes it's way,
The mother exhausted and broken.
One last tear and her heart gives up,
Her child, alone, cries words unspoken.

But outside far in the distance there's
A miracle limping up the street,
His clothes are almost exactly as
They were when he promised no defeat.

Coming home to a cold cottage,
His heart drops as he walks in,
Seeing her lifeless blood spilt on the floor,
He shouts out in the pain of this sin.

A tragedy of harsh deception,
One telegram, one murderous lie.
But he then realizes that under
A stained blanket, his baby hides.

He rushes to the small bundle,
With the sharp activity of a knife
And lifting up the corner he sees
A blue cold body, holding on for dear life.

She cries out the siren of help, and
The room fills with colour, it begins to swirl.
He picks her up and strokes her cheek,
Naming her Poppy, his fighting girl.

What an amazing write. It was incredibly sad.. you really fulfilled the requirement of a twist! i was not expecting that one. The two of you wrote together very well and this piece came out fantastic.
I cannot imagine how that would feel.. to go through something like that.. that poor guy.. and poor women for that matter.. how horrible.
Anyways, a fantastic poem with a nice flow.
