The 21st candle

by DK   Jan 20, 2009

A meet of friends and shake of hands
in all the clothes that set the trends
sounds of chatter and laughter ascends
awaiting the cake of the highest brands

the lights dim down and a song resounds
yet the birthday girl is not in town
and the twenty candles that sits around
with a gush of wind, it all goes down

but all of those we can do without
for the twenty-first is what its all about
it will burn and burn it will throughout
as it awaits for you to blow it out

as presents wait for you to come
unwrapping works are yet to be done
best of wishes are written by some
mine is that you are second to none

may the tough roads that lie ahead
be paved with joy and smiles instead
make all the other wishes left unsaid
and blow that twenty-first candle out dead

    Hello Dennis,

A lovely image painted here of a party - not just any party though, a 21st birthday party for a young woman. The previous year she did not show, but this year, a year on the candle still burns, the presents remain unwrapped and cards unread. The young lady is not coming, is she? She is never going to come, right?

Dennis, there is more beneath the words of this poem and this makes it powerfully emotional.
I like the rhyme scheme you have chosen, aaaa, bbbb - this is not always easy to pull off. Well done on a good job.

    Take care,

    Michael
