Them Vs. We

by Caetlin Miakoda Collison   Jan 25, 2009

How can someone look around,
And not see the disrepair
Not see the vile excuse for humanity
Or the filth amongst the streets?
How can one see a person
When all that’s there is a monster in disguise?
Praying on the very youth
We so desperately try to protect
How can someone watch
And not see the evil they themselves helped to create?
How can they be unaffected
When the very thought of violence
Pulls at the heart with each tear stained face
If you could be so blind to miss this
If you can ignore such horrible things
Then you are as them
You are no better than they who would
Rape this world and rip away its very soul
You are as they
For you are content to overlook such actions
That would make the devil Himself hang up his hat
And weep
For you draw back when a drowning man holds out a hand
And begs you save him
For you must enjoy the sound of a mothers wails
At the loss of her child
Or the haunted look in the eyes of broken men
You are as they
Heartless and cold
With no respect for the hero
Who gave his life to save yours
But you are compelled to honor a liar
Who sits upon power and wealth
In hopes that this corrupt soul might acknowledge you
You are as they
Sickening and vile
With no compassion for those less fortunate than you
If you can not bear to look
And you weep for what you see
Then there is yet hope
If your heart breaks at an orphans hushed cries
Or for the child whose new bruise she covers
Then there is still time
For in your heart is still compassion
Not compressed by lust for power
For your vision is not blurred by gold
And blinded by greed
You are as we
