An empty suitcase

by Ingrid   Jan 31, 2009

An empty suitcase

The wind rustles through the trees
as I sit on a wooden bench in the park
Enjoying the late afternoon sun
Just for a while, soon it will be dark

Slowly he approaches, my old friend
In his hand an old empty suitcase
he carries with him everywhere
His head held high in solemn grace

An old man, who has paid his dues
Fought both world wars, scars to prove
A rich life he has lead, adventurous and grand
Served God and country, always on the move

The suitcase, how distinguished it still looks
The leather handles and the beautiful print
Once it was filled with all kinds of treasures
Now all empty except for a faint smell of mint

He walks straight past me with empty eyes
I softly call his name and he looks around
My arms fold around his stately shoulders
and we walk back together to his part of town

"Do I know you madam?" he asks me politely
And I just smile and answer with a confirmation
Looking at his graceful features and his silver hair
I can hear his gentle soul humming in blissful elation

This poem brought a tear to my eye.
We've all seen the 'old soldier' advanced in years, proudly walking past with a case or possession in their hands.
I simply loved this piece of work Ingrid. One of your best I think.

Seniors the forgotten group especially if they have no family. Not many people take the time to care or help when it is needed. It makes me sad more so now that I am in that in age bracket and soon approaching the no family way of life. It makes you stop and think what will happen when that day comes and you are truly alone, no family, will anyone care or will anyone help. You did a good job on this one. 5/5

This is so beautifully written, there were so many emotions that were pouring out, and really gave the reader clear visuals and feelings about what was going on. A poem that makes you think, this had so much meaning and was so in-deepth, I really loved reading this. 5/5 from me, take care...
