Fragile earth, sinking rapidly to the bottom
A gentle canopy shields you softly--"cotton!"
She screams at the corroding roofs, so rotten
That a tiny light of velvet is now forgotten.
In the rainy days of summer; Two Thousand & Five
I remember her - the black spider - who kept me alive
With caring caresses that let me survive
But to indulge herself as she tried to be sly
And forget to fill the pool as she took one more dive.
Transfixed, in her eyes, I refused to speak
Even as her lips perked, to ask for my cheek
I said, " I don't know any love but what you give"
And she replied, " Oh, I know, thats why you can't live."
As the words spun in my brain about what she could give
I cried, "I'm leaving now! What more could I forgive?"
There's nothing that can crush you more
Than the love of a woman who is just bored.
"You say I left you!", I cried," but it was the other way--
On a rainy Sunday you turned the sky to gray
So that I couldn't see what you came to display
And then your conscience collapsed under its own weight."
Every Sunday 'noon, when it pours rain
I see the eyes of the black spider under the window pane
And wonder if she could feel now so drained
As to toss those aside who she has slain
And leave this life behind to board a long train.
"You don't care about fragile earth, or anything
Except what is going on in your brain.
And if you meet another kind lover who clings
It'll only be one more poor dog in pain."
"Pack your things and pretend you bloom
Like the prettiest flower under the moon
And I'll remember that this once was true;
That you could shine a light right through
Anything that was old which you made new
And the earth spun around just for you."
"I can't remember what it was about us
That seemed like a good idea.
I got lost in your eyes as we progressed
Toward the burning sun.. Maria."
I finished speaking and the sun was out
The rain was tired from a final bout.
She asked, " what were you thinking about?"
I said, " all of the things I can do without."
