Inside the Nighthawk

Inside the Nighthawk
Oscar Baldo

Scarlet and Charles, that's who they are.
Memories fill my mind as I stare at them with envy.
Linda just left me; took the house and the car.
Married about three years ago, I was down on one knee.

Charles chortles as Scarlet snickers with delight.
Remembering the silly jokes Linda and I shared,
Like the time we spent alone, together, that one night.
My lips, contrite, I chuckle quietly thinking that she cared.

Charles looks over, and Scarlet makes a face with disgust
Their faces ask a simple question, "Are you crazy?"
I take a deep breath, seeing that I've lost all their trust;
I replied back with a, "No, my character isn't that hazy."

They return to their conversation. Hm, something about death;
And so I sit here, wondering what I've done to Linda?
Was it me? Was it her? Was it just my breath?
Whatever, I don't miss her. Well, just a bit, kinda.

Charles and Scarlet continue to laugh, putting me through misery.
Can't they see, their happiness simply puts me down?
Man, I wish I fought back, instead of setting her free.
Now I sit here, swigging beer after beer with a frown.

I want to get out of Earth, of my body, of here.
The burnt out lights of the diner sign are quite dead
Like my relationship, like the night that I held on to my dear,
Like me, who I would rather see in place of the lights instead.
