Lifeline

by Katy Nicholson   Mar 30, 2009

A fractured heart and severed wings
Won't get you very far.
Looking as if you're just
A broken string off my guitar.

It doesn't make much difference
I smell the whisky on your breath.
Self-medication won't help
And neither will the meth.

Don't stop chasing your dreams
Or you won't catch what you want.
A few things you should get rid of
Are the memories that haunt.

Forget about the past
But never what it taught you.
Life lessons are important
Things you must learn to do.

But know I'll always be here
To encourage you through all.
Know you can take my hand
Everytime you slip and fall.

I want to be your guideline
I want to be your crying shoulder.
I want to warm your heart
Whenever it gets colder.

And when you can let me in
I promise I will stay.
I'll be waiting at your door
Which is more that I can say.

All I know is that I'm here
Don't know how much I've bled.
But for you, I know it's tough
Alone, trapped inside your head.

I feel you looking in
Gazing through the glass at me.
And with your eyes a little brighter
I know it's hope that you see.

No one ever told you
That it feels like forever.
Before you find your sanity
You fall like a feather.

Very slowly, you drift
Making your way to the ground.
A few blood tainted roses
To your stone; I am bound.

No one ever told me
That love can last forever.
Maybe now I'll rest
Waking up to never.

Your name is now carved
Into the palm of my hand.
It burns, and it aches
But with you I still stand.

My heart's dead pulse
Would once beat for you.
I even used to wonder
If you'd make it through.

If you only knew sooner
That someone was there.
You may have found peace
With someone who cared.

An un-answered question
How much is real.
When selflessness
Is the way we feel.

These are our thoughts
Surrounded by law.
Fake as mannequins-
I see what you saw.

Digging under your skin
There's a deeper infection.
You could have been saved
But believed in perfection.

Look where this got you
You reached a dead end.
You've created this pain
Which time couldn't mend.

Elemental mountains
And celestial skies.
Can't compare to the flaws
That I found in your eyes.

After a third thought
There was never any doubt.
You were the imperfect angel
I had always dreamed about.

This is how it was
Without turning back time.
This was my best mistake
And your only lifeline..

Wow... this poem is amazing... I loved everything about it. I can relate to some parts, like wanting to show someone they can trust you and trying to show them you're willing to help them with anything.. and yet they're still not opening up.. This poem really touched me. Great job!
