Orphan Annie

Orphan Annie

I walked in the garden
overgrown with weeds and briers
velvet roses still sprang up
here and there, lingering
somehow refused to wither and die
Orphan Annie, the big Persian cat
showed up one rainy night
and refused to leave
what could I do
but love her
So here she lay
among the confusion
waiting for our daily heart to heart

Sweet Annie, How did I let this happen?
The roses were so pure and beautiful
I tended them so carefully
Weeds, they grow so fast
and there were so many!
I weakened, and gave up
Now the beauty is hidden
and hard to get to
Slowly they die, from lack of care

You understand don't you?
Someone threw you away
Left you in the rain
shivering
alone
Were you not worth caring for,
not soft and warm?
Did you not purr at their feet?

I patted her head gently and whispered
It is their loss Annie,
for you are such a good listener!
