River Rocks

by Melissa   May 4, 2009

Yesterday, while browsing Lowe's
I stumbled upon the river rock aisle-
it was long and bony,
like the creeks in New York,
only no water nuzzled my toes
with the intimacies of nature

and the stones (although just as supple)
were not sought out
by the fishes
indigenous to my secrets,
they did not beget images of
sweaty days where life
had more meaning
than a satellite,
those rocks
meant nothing to me

and I feel a slight twinge of resentment toward Lowe's,
as they're selling mementos
at $3.82 a pound
for the sake of modern day convenience

I didn't really know where you were going with this when I read "Lowes" but wow! You took such a simple thing and created such a profoundly deep poem.
    Perfection! Keep it up, Holly
