Empty Eyes

by Indian Comma Bean   May 7, 2009

Often thinking, we are dwelling,
No spirit moves our nature elsewhere.
Tears that fall so often stain our memory,
That dreaming is chance enough to suffer.

Like a wolf in the night, we are hungry,
Not for flesh, no, tonight we dine on dignity.
No needle nor bottle seemed to cry,
That was time enough for hearts to mourn.

When mothers, on their knees, are begging,
What say the boys that stand behind the doors...
Fractured light hiding frightened eyes.
Tonight, dreaming is chance enough to escape.

Often thinking, I am pondering,
Were we as people crueler than the beast?
For tonight, dreaming is our serenity-
And mankind rests within our mind.
