You Will Remember Me.

by Phantasmagoria   May 19, 2009

There will come a day when,
as you lie in a drunken slumber
the wind will whisper the past to you
and you will remember me.
Your hands will go numb
and you will reach out in a familiar gesture,
but my warmth will not be there to greet you.
Your arms will cradle raw air and it will be then
that you realize you are alone
and you will remember me.
You will remember how your eyes caught themselves in mine
and how you had once called to me for comfort.
There will come a day that,
as you doze in subway stations in solitary euphoria,
you recall when happiness was not just an illusion.
And you will stumble into the night
for another cigarette,
the moon's phosphorescent glow will find you and you
will crave the sun.
You will struggle to breathe as you are engulfed
by the kind words I had once calmed you with and
you will remember me.
You will remember when the world around you
did not hold overtones of menace and when sentiment
did not threaten to overwhelm you.
There will come a day, far from now,
as you discover yourself again in this town
that you tried so hard to escape and then you will
remember me.
You will drive past the park where we first kissed
and somewhere within your hollow shell
will echo a reminder of what it was to love.
You will wander, alone, through the streets
searching for just a mere glimpse of me,
to savor another moment that does not stagnate
in the steady stream of time,
but I will be gone.
Your mind will begin to ache, cracking under its own weight
like old wooden floorboards and then,
you will remember me.
You will, at last, remember me.
