Obsessed~Retourne

by Poet on the Piano   Jun 1, 2009

I can still hear them whispering,
Everyone thinks I'm paranoid,
But I'm only being cautious,
Careful of so much of my life.

Everyone thinks I'm paranoid,
Too tormented by the numbers,
My reflection in the mirror,
Puts me to shame when I observe.

But I'm only being cautious,
Staying healthy and eating less,
Still I gain and more people stare,
Distress has dominated thoughts.

Careful of so much of my life,
What people think affects me most,
I don't have that perfect body,
Like all the skinny models do.

Written For A Contest-

A Retourne is a French poetry form that consists of four quatrains (four-line stanzas), with each line having eight syllables. The trick is though that the first stanza's second line must also be the second stanza's first line, the first stanza's third line is the third stanza's first, and the first stanza's fourth line is the fourth stanza's first. Retournes can but do not have to rhyme.

About the poem: it was cleverly construed and I really enjoyed reading it.

I liked it before I read your explanation of a Retourne, and then I understood the outline. Beautifully written with wonderful words. 5/5
