Today I Smiled.

Today I laughed
much to my surprise.
It's been so long
since that opportunity last arrived.

It's good to know,
that I can still smile.
That should go without saying,
but it's been a while.

It's been weeks since I last tried
to persevere through this fight.
You can't imagine how I cried,
hoping it would one day be alright.

It's been days since I've spoken
to the one who started all this.
It seems I've finally awoken,
and realized that happiness can exist.

Amongst the hurt,
and all the pain I feel,
I have forgotten how to trust
and forgotten what is real.

What's real is not the distress,
or the bitterness inside.
What's real is my success,
and the bumps along the ride.

For, one day, I'm sure
I'll achieve my dreams.
I'll open that locked door,
No matter how hard it seems.

I'll break my internal bindings,
that keep me from moving ahead.
Although my road keeps winding
I'll be proud of the life I've led.

I can't promise you
that I'll always be okay
But what I can do
is tell you that I am today.

Today I smiled,
I laughed and I felt free.
Today I was the child,
that I never got to be.
