Time (Spenserian Sonnet)

by Liquid Dreams   Jun 29, 2009

The time proceeds without a thought to slow;
One day a child, but now the youth is grown.
No man decides the route down which you'll go
But you, for life's path is your choice alone.

Surely with life come times that are unknown,
The times will seem as dark and grim as night.
Disturbed as reeds in wind, you will be blown,
But look beyond the bend; for there is light.

Never decide to resign from your plight,
For then in life you will no longer be.
When the strife is done, it will be all right,
Believe and have hope, and you will be free.

The time has come to grow and use your voice;
Be who you are, for life's path is your choice.

* A sonnet is a short lyric poem with 14 lines. Usually (like mine here) it is written in iambic pentameter. A Spenserian Sonnet is more difficult to write than a Shakesperian Sonnet because it has a more complex rhyme scheme. The Spenserian Sonnet's rhyme scheme is "abab bcbc cdcd ee."
