The Best Years Of Our Lives

by Sweet Disposition   Jul 21, 2009

This poem explains how I'm feeling about finishing school and leaving my old friends behind..

Our tongues dare not voice it
But it's apparent in the eye
Hands stiffen with each second
Reluctant to wave goodbye

Fingers gripping the foundations
The building blocks of this: our bond
Hearts now fearful of the freedom
That for all those years we longed

Apprehensive of the future,
We prefer to play with past
Living out the blessed memories
Struggling now to make time last

For we sense the journey's ending
We each have differnt turns to take
Separate paths lead to our futures
All with new memories to make

Although we've so much to experience:
Success and failure, husbands, wives
We know we'll always cherish these days
As the best years of our lives.

I remember when I left school like if was yesterday. Times have changed alot. I have 1/2 of those school friends left. Most of us have families now.

Brilliant! It was absolutely brilliant and I loved every line! As soon as I'd read the fisr stanza I knew it was going to be a great poem. It was so well written. The words you used, the effortless flow. It's instantly a favourite. The message is so clear and genuine, and it's so relateable. A great, great poem. Loved it. Honestly. I'm saving it to my favourites right now. How did this not win?

Gosh, unbelievable dictation of exactly how i feel, and how my friends feel, to be leaving school right now. and written so well! i love the 'play with the past' and 'stuggling to make time last', they are the most relatable and well written lines i think. x
