In A Nutshell

by ether   Aug 9, 2009

My birthday is just another day of the year. Christmas is a hoax.
My walk is irrelevant and I'm sure the Earth doesn't feel it.
My eyes are not a window to my soul;
in fact I don't even think I have a soul.
I'm not generic all the time and neither are you.
Sure, you can do something outrageous to claim some originality,
but it all boils down the same.
There will always be people that know you, know of you.
And there will always be people that don't care to learn about the space you occupy.
I'm just another being, I move and I breathe.
I try and keep my heart in my chest and my beliefs on my sleeve.

    "My birthday is just another day of the year. Christmas is a hoax.
    My walk is irrelevant and I'm sure the Earth doesn't feel it."

    ^Great lines, especially the last. Shows how insignificant we all seem to think we are on this planet, in this universe.

    "My eyes are not a window to my soul;
    in fact I don't even think I have a soul."

    ^I like this, as it makes me think of how many times I've been stared at, right in the eyes, and have lied. And all the while, nobody noticed, because you can't look into someones eyes and always see everything. There are things hidden, deep within. The only thing I don't like is the use of the word "soul". Perhaps you could make the last line say, "in fact, I don't even think I have one (or one of those.)" Just a suggestion.

    "I'm not generic all the time and neither are you.
    Sure, you can do something outrageous to claim some originality,
    but it all boils down the same."

    ^This reminds me of a quote I read once. It went something like, "In this day, originality has become another synonym for conformity."

    "There will always be people that know you, know of you.
    And there will always be people that don't care to learn about the space you occupy."

    ^I sometimes think of how many people I know. Not know on a personal level, but who I just know of, who probably don't even know I exist, or who probably don't want to begin to even care.

    "I'm just another being, I move and I breathe.
    I try and keep my heart in my chest and my beliefs on my sleeve."

    ^Good, simple last lines that show just how human you are. You're here, functioning, and trying to be real. And I like how they rhyme. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but I do like it.

    Overall, I rather enjoyed this piece, very easy to relate to, especially for me. I do love the title as well. Nice job. :)
