September's Sorrow

by Sora   Sep 2, 2009

Darkness is surrounding them, as they laugh about old times,
Yet, his eyes are filled with fear.
But his laughter overpowers the butterflies in her stomach,
Not knowing she was in reach of shedding her every tear.

The country road was empty,
Occasionally with a car or two passing by.
Then her rear view announced bright lights coming from behind,
The car jerked, she then looked into her brother's eyes.

Her heart dropped into the pit of her stomach,
As the car continued to bump their rear.
She looked over, he had no seatbelt on,
But, suddenly, she slammed on her brakes when the car again interferred.

Her head hit the steering wheel with so much force,
Making everything complete darkness, not hearing a sound.
Seconds later her eyes slowly flutter,
Looking over, her brother was nowhere to be found.

Glass, she realized, is everywhere as she shouts his name,
She walks alongside the bridge, and runs to the rail.
A black figure appears several feet below,
And her feet ran to it without fail.

She's on her knees now, clutching him to her chest,
"Please talk to me, don't leave me, I'm begging you," she cried.
He was still but slurring words she couldn't understand.
He then fell silent, that was the night her reason for living, died.

She then felt a presence behind her, and quickly turned around,
He turned without saying a word and ran away.
It must have been the other driver, seeing what damage he's done,
At that moment she realized that this was the day.

He spoke of his fears, planning on making an escape,
Wishing for something better, knowing something evil was in reach.
He told her everything that cool fall night,
As they walked alongside the beach.

Yet, she grieves of him still to this day,
It was that smile she use to see in his eyes that gave her hope.
And now that he's gone, she sees it no longer,
Which makes it almost impossible for her to cope.

He's in good hands now, but even so,
Her heart isn't content, and scars bear her sight.
All because her best friend died before her eyes,
On that faithful September night.

The saddness is so clear in every line and the pain in undeniable in every verse.
Beautifully penned in every sense of those two words. The emotions are exploding over each stanzas.

I can definitely feel the pain screaming through this poem! :(
The poem in itself needs a little working on though, it would be much easier to read and follow it the sentences were about the same length (I know that it is very hard to achieve). But it is an amazing poem and i think it deserves 5/5
