Why?

by Sylvia   Sep 13, 2009

A withered old man sits beside the bed,
holding the wrinkled hand of his beloved.
Many thoughts fill his head with dread,
as she valiantly struggles to live.

Our time together has been so brief.
Hear my prayer God, please don't take her,
for I could not withstand the grief.
Let us have a chance to love evermore.

Tears fill his eyes as he asks why?
Was there another angel needed in heaven?
Burdened with sadness, he says his last goodbye,
determined not to become a bitter man.

My darling wife, soon we will be together again.
Until then, my days will be full of sweet memories,
times of shared laughter, roses and champagne.
Our love will endure in paradise eternally.

A heart-wrenching moment you've portrayed so beautifully here. Your poem fills me with compassion and sadness for this old couple, holding onto their happy memories as time is swifty running out.

When a couple lives together for a very long
time, they find it hard to live when the other
    half dies...a touching write.

The first line was gold. After that I knew I was reading a great poem. Everyone says it's sad and indeed it is but the way you wrote this is simply beautiful. There is no other word to describe. I loved it :) Keep up the amazing work. Nik

Beautiful poem, very nicely written. I could see the man crying right in front of my eyes.

'Tears fill his eyes as he asks why?
Was there another angel needed in heaven?'

This line made me burst too.

    Awesome poem

all the best and take care
