Driving her home

by Chelsey   Oct 22, 2009

He was driving her home, like he did every night
A manly gesture, to make sure she got home alright
He was sweet, romantic, Cinderella's dream
After being with him she would joyfully scream

Her daddy approved, he knew it was fine
He treated her right and brought her home on time
Dad never stayed up to wait, he just left on the porch light
There they were five minutes before curfew, kissing goodnight

Her favorite part of their dates were the car rides home
In his tinted windowed mustang, outlined with silver chrome
She always felt safe; she could really tell he cared
Little did she know, ten years later she'd be scared

Oh where did her prince charming go? The man she always knew
Married with a child, her husband now lives for brew
And it makes her sick inside to watch how he lives
Beer over powering his emotions, neglecting her and their kid

She gets calls at 2:30, has to wake up her baby boy
He's passed out in a bar, another night destroyed
And she's driving him home, reminiscing of the nights
Where she meant the world to him and they never got into fights

She's driving him home for the third time this week
Wasted, in a daze, he could barely speak
Ten years ago, a gentleman, he was behind the wheel
Now she drives him home and can't believe this is real

You wouldn't believe how often this happens. Before a couple gets married everything is perfect and the guy is sweet and romantic, but as soon as their married he becomes somebody else. I really like this poem and the rhyming and imagery it was well done. The only thing I'd suggest is changing the title of the poem to something a little more catchy.... sometimes people scrolling through poems read the title and it just hooks them :)
