I heard your whisper today...

by Mr Rhee   Dec 18, 2009

I heard your whisper today.
You whispered in my ear,
and told me you were there.
I could only smile, as I walked along,
with the knife gripped in my hand.

"Baby, no. You don't have to,"
you said to me, quietly.
"You know you really don't want to.
Please. Please, just turn around."

I stopped walking, and closed my eyes.
I waited, and waited, and listened,
in case you had something more to say.
Quiet, quiet, ...nothing ...nothing.

I opened my eyes, and took one step.
"Wait! No, don't. Just go home, Babe."
I stopped, and looked around,
and wondered if you were really there.

"You can't change it back. I can't come back.
Just go home. Put the knife away. Please?"
I could feel my jaw start to quiver,
and my eyes began to tear.

What am I supposed to do now?
How can I stop, after coming this far?
Why won't you let me just finish this
small act for you?

I felt my hand get warm suddenly.
I looked at it, as you held onto it,
just like you used to before.
I wish you were here, so I could hold you again.

"It's okay, Babe. It wasn't his fault. It's
not anybody's fault. Don't be mad anymore.
Just go home, and have some dinner.
You'll see me again, I promise."

I looked at the knife in my trembling hand.
It was shiny, and new, and still clean,
with no sweat on it's grip, or blood, on it's edge.
Baby, please come back. Please help me.

I felt the warmth of your arms around me,
and the kiss of your lips on my on my cheek.
Tears fell from my eyes, down my face,
and into the cradle of your warm, loving, heart.

I heard your whisper again today.
I heard you whisper at breakfast,
and in the park, and on the way to work.
I could only smile, as I walked along.
