Fireflies

by Ingrid   Jan 17, 2010

On a warm August night
the light attracted them,
two lonely fireflies twirling,
upon the soft summer breeze.
A dance began, above the fire
scorching heat was a demon
bringing out passion,
mixed with fear.
Their hearts rejoiced,
as they grew fonder
with each new meeting
on the moonlit beach.
Then fall came
with heavy rains
and soon winter, cold winds
blew the little insects
far from their hiding place.
As the wind howled
and made the wind chimes
sing their eerie song
two small voices
gave their final cry
for all that is born
must one day die.

What a sad but lovely poem Ingrid. I did enjoy reading this write.
In my minds eye, I could visualise the two fireflies doing their dance of Love, untimately dying at the end as the seasons changed, and their short lives came to an end. So sad, but put into such descriptive and eloquent wording by yourself.
You truly are a great poet!

A very well written piece, and a powerful end.

  • Beautiful and so very sad. You speak truth in this piece. I absolutely love the powerful ending:

    "for all that is born
    must one day die."

    Brilliant!!

I loved this poem!!! I like how you used a simple insect and turned it into a work of art. This poem was written so beautifully, I just loved the whole thing, every single line. :)

I like poems that are free without the need to rhyme that often times steal away the best words because they don't have the right sound. I only have a small group of poems that rhyme and find them restricted in some ways.

    I liked this especially well;

    As the wind howled
    and made the wind chimes
    sing their eerie song
    two small voices
    gave their final cry
    for all that is born
    must one day die.
