Who Was The One

by Mark Spencer   Jan 21, 2010

My little boy was killed today,
By a fast moving car.
The driver had been drinking at
One of the local bars.

She'd been drowning in the sorrows,
Of her own tragedies.
But nothing could abate her pain,
Nor ease her memories.

Her brother died three months ago,
From a violent fate.
He was murdered for being gay,
It was a crime of hate.

His killer was consumed with rage
At the loss of his wife.
Killed by a blood transfusion,
'Twas AIDS that took her life.

The blood had been donated by
A girl needing a fix.
It was a habit she paid for,
Each night by turning tricks.

Yet it was better on the streets,
Than home had ever been.
Getting raped by her own father,
Abused, time and again.

He had served some time in prison,
Accused of child abuse,
But he had a good attorney,
And soon they cut him loose.

So he could drive his daughter out,
To a life on the streets.
Where events were set in motion,
And a circle completes.

Who was the one responsible,
When all is said and done;
For the loss that I have suffered,
At the death of my son?

I clearly see who was the one
Behind my tragedy.
I only have myself to blame,
That attorney was me.

Wow, I must say that I am a little speechless right now. This was one of the most moving and emotional poems I have read in a while. I liked how in each stanza, you told of a different person's life, and how it contributed to the death of another. The ending really got me; it was something that was not expected. Also, the imagery told a story (a sad story) that truely touched me. Also, at the same time, you pulled a perfect rhyme scheme off. All I can say is that you are now one of my favorite authors. This poem deserves nothing less than a 5 <--- I would give it a 10 if I could.

Thank you for the beautiful read.

Oh my goodness...My thoughts are everywhere right now, I have so much I want to say I don't know where to start.
Let me first say, I LOVED the way the one persons choice affected another choice, which led to another stanza, that stanza led to another stanza....it was incredible how everything was tied together in this poem (just like in real life).
For years I have had you on my favorites list. Your creativity and your talent has always been something I truly admired. This was an excellent write :)
