One day can change the world,
One day can damage the world,
One day can shatter the world,
At least it did for me.
I was five years old,
You were seventy-one.
Grandfather and granddaughter,
We were best friends.
I was young and insecure
when I lost my friend of five years.
Lost a battle; there was no way out.
Fought and fought until no more.
I never thought I would understand
What happened that day
As I walked up to the casket,
And saw one of my greatest fears.
My best friend lying there,
Hopeless,
Lifeless,
Spiritless.
It didn't make sense; nothing did.
One day my world was alive,
One day my world was full of love,
One day my world changed,
And it all came crashing down.
I stand in the hallway with my cousin,
The ambulance arrives,
My mom is crying,
And you are being carried away.
The last look I saw in your eyes - fear.
I reciprocated the emotion;
Not knowing what was happening,
Not knowing what to do,
Not knowing if I will see you again.
God needed another angel,
To make his heaven better.
He took you away from me,
To be his new best friend.
One day changed my world,
One day distorted my life.
One day I will never forget.
That day I lost my best friend.
