Your ghost haunting my shadow

by Daniel Rutter   May 9, 2010

I'm holding on to your shadow,
Your ghost lingers,
I can't get warm without your arms around me,
I can't sleep without your body next to mine

I said it could never happen, but who am I to condemn?
My emotions scared me so I ran as far and as fast as I could
But your ghost is still haunting me
Your shadow still keeping time with mine

Another tear, another crime,
I can't seem to shake the shiver,
Your ghost running fingers up and down my spine,
Haunting my deepest memories

Reaching out to touch you in the dark
I almost feel your skin before my hand draws back of its own accord
Brief wetness on the pillow next to mine
From tears too far away to comprehend

I want to feel you reach back,
The darkness shapes your figure...
Is that coldness on my cheek your fingers brushing?
Or is it another tear drying?

I hadn't realised how cold the night got
Until I fled your warmth
Your ghost comforts me while chilling me to the bone
As shadows trip me with my guilty memories

So I cover thyself with another blanket,
Trying to warm myself close to your touch,
Hoping the memories of your arms,
Will surround and comfort me

But no; there's only the hot water bottle
That's empty just like me
And my heart has started to freeze over
Without the sun in your eyes to keep it thawed
