Temptation

by Anthony M   May 21, 2010

My nemesis calls upon me
once again as is her custom,
my mind taken hostage
and emotions turned loose.

Though this foe is unwelcome
I invite her presence nonetheless,
convinced I can befriend her
she slyly laughs at my naivete.

Her ploy unravels slowly at first
luring me into one more tryst,
disarmed by the promise of joy
I succumb to her wicked desires.

I have become my own prisoner
yet I hold the key to my freedom,
but still I give her the power
to use me, control me, slowly kill me.

Thanks for the great comments and the votes. This has been my foray into a more free verse type of poetry and I'm really rather pleasantly surprised that enough people liked it as to even have it nominated, let alone win.

I get the most satisfaction from the readers that understand my poems and leave comments. This make me feel as though my writing is better than I really think it is; you guys always give me a higher grade than I give myself :)

I loved this. Usually I write much more loosely so I don't tend to go for structured poems but this one is exceptional. A story well told. great work! :)

We are powerless at times to stop giving our love the power to control us and our feelings. We keep going back for more, thinking it will be love this time, only it more pain and suffering. Some lessons we never learn.
