Red gravel track

by Nicko   Jun 2, 2010

Down Colac
Runs this red gravel track
Long muddy
Deep rutted, red raw, bumpy!

Wondering past cattle painted black
A Cocky's price upon their back
Past bracken, fields of Irish Glas
Once the land of John Co-Coc-Coine

Through deep burrs of ferny green
Moss covered giants seldom seen
My vehicle covered in mud
Grip the wheel, rush of blood

Out on the left, an open plain
Picture postcard within a frame
Two stroke fumes hit me quick!
6 dogs chase a stick

Old homestead encased in tents
In the middle, Steve organising events
People wander hither and hither
Dirt bikes aquiver

We mingle around trees ancient, blazing
Sparking embers, smoke wafting, us gazing
VB, Boags, Pure Blonde melting
Drizzle, run for it, raining

Fires embers awaken
"Steak, eggs, hash browns please"
Rockets away...
Away, a long, long, way, away.

On the Black Monster truck
This beauty, we won't get stuck
Over bush and track
With kids and the rest, up on the back

We can't escape "It's time to go"
Back through the bush, slow
On that Red Gravel track
But fear not, I'll be back,
Jack.!

A mate has property and a bunch of us went there for the weekend..

Stunning. You have gathered Australia into a poem, with great liveliness and imagery. I can smell the bush, I can taste the beer, I can hear your voice.

    Pity you're from New Zealand.
