I Still Remember...

I still remember the day...
when you gently took my hand.
My little heart was pumping,
and no one could understand

the fears I'd built inside me
of my first day at school...
I didn't want to leave you,
didn't want to look a fool.

We walked into the classroom,
I stood closely by your side...
Hoping, wishing no one saw
the tears that escaped my eyes.

I trembled and murmured quietly,
"Mum I don't want to be here..."
You knelt and wiped my tears away
and kissed away my fear.

Bravely, then I decided
a soldier I would be...
I walked into the classroom,
Alone, as you smiled at me
