Bewilderment

by Beautiful Chaos   Oct 12, 2010

Your warm words left me feeling cold,
Reminiscent of years gone by,
When slowly, lovingly, you would stroke my heart,
Before devouring it like a starving sycophant.

As much as my heart wants to reply,
My mind remembers the trap,
My pulse the only echoing sentiment,
As I turn to walk away.

Not until I'm alone, will I let it soak in,
Drowning in every emotion ever felt,
Unwilling to let you see it,
And bask in my pain for even a second.

Wrestling with every thought,
I'll rewrite our story in my head,
Torturing myself with every ending,
But ending it nevertheless.

Someday I'll look back without pain,
Warm memories caressing old shivers,
And I'll be thankful for the love,
That once left me for dead.
