What You Can't Have.

by ether   Nov 1, 2010

I could lay asleep or wide awake,
Regretting choices that I make.
Nothing burns like the midnight moon,
When your lover sings a broken tune.
You were easy like a tambourine,
Not caring for what I had seen.

So I stuck with the old instrument thinking it could mend,
Thinking I could get by while my heart is on the lend.
I could have made it far enough to get inside his breath,
I could have leapt inside his eyes and drowned within their depth.
But an opportunity so fleeting, I wonder do you crave the loss?
Do you wish you'd picked up the pieces that I'd seen and lost.
Too late to take a breath as you creep back through the tiles.
I could have made the move; I could have followed you for miles.
Sheltered you inside, far from where the truth lies.
And you keep me in your stomach where I make those butterflies.
