On the shelf

by Ronald Edwards   Nov 16, 2010

Dusty and dark
on the back of the shelf,
is where you put me to stay.

I use to be
up front with the others,
but now Im out of your way.

No longer wanted
or used anymore,
discarded like yesterdays news.

Blindsided I was
from out of the blue,
our times just merely a ruse.

So here I sit
one day Ill be gone,
and leave this dusty dark shelf.

Ill find some place else
where the welcome mats out,
not alone and all by myself.

A poem of sadness touched in hope. I really enjoyed the read. We all have sad times and emotions that hit botttom, but if the hope is there things change
    Great job

This was a nice poem that had many emotions spread across the lines. The message of the poem could be related to a lot of things, which Sylvia listed off, that we put somewhere out of reach as to forget about it because of the pain or hurt or some other region. I believe your poem was leaning more to a human perspective on how someone might like you one minute and then the next they just throw you away or like you said, put upon a shelf to be forgotten about. Overall a great poem that was quite sad and an enjoyable read. Great job and keep writing.

As I read this, many situations arose in my mind, people being forgotten and put on the shelf, a favorite toy, keepsakes, the list goes on. Gives the reader many options. Well done. In this line, where the welcome mattes out, I think mattes should be spelled mats, not sure though.
