Winter Marks the Earth

by Viola   Dec 7, 2010

Winter marks the earth
it's floored in a white carpet
knee deep
and it's easy to associate this with some kind of happiness
I mean
it's easy to recall
your breath on my face
when you held me close
at the bus shelter
on those cold winter nights
when my whole body would shiver
even easier to remember the way
your heart sped up
the way you were afraid to kiss me
my hand on your chest
and your heart practically jumping out
thump thump thump
and then when you finally did
I went home red flushed and warm all over
in that -20 weather
it's easy for me
to close my eyes
and remember me slowly shedding my clothes in your basement
so simple and yet so moving
when I waited sitting on your couch
in the dark of the basement
while you went to see a friend out upstairs
I removed my sweater, left in a small top and jeans
and it still makes me blush
to remember the way you looked coming down the stairs
amazed
the way you said "wow"
I'd never felt beautiful to anyone before
and so winter
holds some sort of sacred meaning
of the days when this was all new
easy, simple, careless and yet so caring
we, just two teenagers, falling in love
so when the nights drown me in pain now
when the tears swallow me alive
when your heart closes a gate
or when my mind tries to push you away
when all I really want is to have you by me
for the rest of my life
I will think of those innocent winter days
we were like the freshly fallen snow
no pain, no worries
just love
