They took the wrong finger

by Ronald Edwards   Dec 30, 2010

I wrote this poem three years ago for Gary a friend who just could not deal with what life had dealt him. Instead of seeking help he curled up inside his head and died. I post this today for those who might be in such pain to say that there are others just like you that understand and feel your pain. There is a softer easier way, please, stop and think, think it thru before you cant think ever again ....

Early that morning
with the sound of the waves
he sat in his car all alone.

The black hole returned,
swallowed him whole,
turning his future to stone.

Nine fingers he had,
they all worked just fine,
that night he needed just one.

If only the doctor
knew what was to happen
he d cut off the one used for a gun.

Gary found that place
deep in his head
the reality all of us dread.

Darkness and pain
are lord of this realm
those who enter all end up dead.

Rest in peace my friend
may God forgive
what you ve done on Valentines Day.

I hope and I pray
that I never take
that same path to end up that way

Excellent poem! Your poem paints a vivid, unforgettable picture of your friend's tragic end and the void he left behind. A moving lesson to anyone contemplating suicide.

Your pen has taken us to a place that most don't like to think about. Yet there are so many who find themselves in this dark place.

    The black hole returned,
    swallowed him whole,
    turning his future to stone

The black hole comes without an invatation. It just shows up and consumes your soul.

    Darkness and pain
    are lord of this realm
those who enter all end up dead.

When lost in the darkness and pain.usually you don't let anyone enter. You push them away. Don't answer the door or phone. You don't want to allow these feelings to trap anyone else.

    Rest in peace my friend
    may God forgive
what you ve done on Valentines Day.

I like to think God would forgive. Because this kind of depression is not somethng that is wanted or asked for. It just happens.

    Excellent job my friend.

Yes Sylvia your are right, Gary was dead in his heart and soul before he even pulled the trigger. What mess left behind, what a terrible terrible mess.

There is nothing that I can say about this, other than even if they had cut off that trigger finger and he was determined to leave us to grieve and miss him, he would have found a way.
