I keep reading
our last drivel,
as though a clue
might suddenly emerge
in your tone, my melody,
or the way you punctuate
a certain exclamation
with a period

but I am lost to reason,
there was no hint of parting
in the way you left your sentiments
intact,
not a solitary word
to scrutinize over coffee
it's not right to leave me here,
paraphrasing us,
alone
