My Shadow, a tribute to Betty

by Ingrid   Mar 25, 2011

My Shadow

On your woolen rug I find myself, standing,
waiting,
for some kind of sign...
All is as it was: a little pillow, made from a towel
toys, neatly placed on top

I cannot part with them,
for fear you might still be around
and would think we have moved on.

Oh, how sad that would make your tiny heart,
heart with a hole....

My Betty...the tears just keep on flowing
How I loved you, my tiny shadow.
For eleven years long
I shared with you, my every meal,
my walks, my hopes and dreams,
and your unconditional love changed something
deep inside my soul. You mended things,
I never knew were broken.

When you were as big as my hand
I made you a promise
to always care for you, and to not let you suffer,

-not ever-

I could not mend this tiny hole, my Betty...
no one could

How I loved you-

each and every day of your precious life.

On the 21st of March, my precious Maltese Lion Betty was put to sleep at my request, because she had a hole in her heart chamber, that was slowly killing her. This tiny dog changed me, she showed me love that far goes beyond anything I have ever encountered. I hope and pray to one day see her again, when I go to heaven too.

    Ingrid,
Growing up, I had a black Labrador called Ebbie (Ebony) and when I was 17, she died. I am 34 and can count myself lucky in that I have never lost a close family member yet.
To the point. Losing that dog is still (probably) the saddest day of my life - it took me months to get over - and I still get upset thinking about that day 17 years later.
People who have never had a dog often don't seem to understand how hard it hits you, do they?
A wonderful tribute, really well written.
    All the very best,
    Ben
