A Son's Devotion

by Jojo Rae   Apr 5, 2011

A boy and his mother
Live all alone,
In a two bedroom apartment
The place they call home.
They stay up and wait
For the call every night,
A call from the boy's father
Who is at war, in a fight.
The boy doesn't know
His father real well,
He knows he's a nice man
By the voice he can tell.
After a long talk
The boy went to bed,
He dreamed he was at the fight
And a man lay there dead.
The boy had awoken
In a terrible fright,
He did not like
The dream about the fight.
A few days after
The dream had occured,
There came a knock on the door
And two officers.
The boy looked over
To see his mother crying,
He tried to comfort her
But she said she wished she was dying.
He didn't know what to do
He didn't know what to say,
All he did was wonder
Why it had to be this way.
At the funeral
The flag was folded up,
A marine handed it to the boy
And said, "You don't have to be tough".
The boys eyes started to water
As he tried not to cry,
Then one single tear
Dripped down from his eye.
The boy prays every night
More than he did before,
He prays for his father
Whom he lost to the war.

This is so sad, and the worse part is that it is so true. This is why I have so much admiration for the families of soldiers, this poem was lovely and it flowed nicely. Beautiful job =]
