Independence Day

by rob   May 13, 2011

Over green felt one eve that radiant
smile directed his way first beamed
'til then such a charming lass
could have only been dreamed

Milky white skin in concert with a
carefully placed daisy in her hair
Teased, braided and meticulously
pinned, no gal could compare

A beacon of sorts for light shined
bright for all hopeful chaps to see
"What could this diamond in the
rough possibly want with me?"

"Wait now.. For it does appear it
may be too good to be true.."
From the wary group one claims beau
and may not yet be quite through

Dismiss the all-too-brief interlude
for turmoil would surely follow
Abstain from further advances and
the undue drama and sorrow

With no chance meetings a while
memory of the encounter fades
Until one July 4 affair honors this land's
freedom as well as this fair maid's

One deliberate hug equally given and
received starts the whirlwind romance
Hearts-a-flutter another connection is
clear as the glowing lovers dance

Exploring the depths of passion
making love is found to be magical
Ne'er a word need be spoken the
more this union borders the fanatical

Life's many facets more anticipated
now and each warmly embraced
Touring, loving, stargazing, partying,
together all manner of fun is chased

Too soon however the first chink
in the enamored armor reveals
This seemingly impenetrable shield
lack of transparency and trust steals

No longer the simple as first thought
life's challenges so easily faced
Brick and mortar removed where from
the foundation once carefully placed

Regular chats fewer now as the
cherished love seems to dwindle
Time and again embraced are attempts
with the auspicious goal to rekindle

Stern words and spates of silence
soon become all but routine
Fruitless arguments and misdeeds
now regularly part of the scene

Stinging harsh words spoken can
be forgiven but rarely forgotten
"What terrible and evil force has this
once wondrous bond begotten?"

Note: this rhyme stanza is temporary
for the entire story has yet to unfold
Fleeting but present a bantam chance
remains before hearts grow too cold

Hey Rob this poem was well written and an interesting read. The story tells of how two lovers meet fall in love become disenchanted and fall out of love. This is true for most people, I think almost everyone has at least one such story. My thoughts about old flames tends to be " well she was a nice girl, but what was I thinking?" Well written Rob and a reminder to me to cherish my love. Grant
