Indescribable (a poem for Sophie Lancaster)

by Andy Beck   May 25, 2011

Oh ignorant world, open thy eyes
Open them now to look upon us
Assembled we stand before the sunrise,
before the sunrise that voided our dusk
Eyes to the ground with tears from above
We gather around in remembrance of one
Attire as black as the shadows we bear
Cold and afraid in this life so unfair

Your system has failed us, your system expects
acceptance from victims who never transgressed
Your system has jailed us, wants us to conform
Feeding us rules of which you saw no dawn

That night we lost our angel, over at Stubbylee Park
The light that hope once gave has given way to searing dark
For those bereaved and hurting, no justice or relent
Sometimes only pain will help it end

Oh ignorant world, open thy mind
To think of us for the people that we are
We stand together as one of a kind
But like you, we tolerate life in our hearts
You judged the cover, did not turn the page
Attacking with vigour of demon enraged
Kicking the breath from an innocent man
Kicking to death what you don't understand

Your system has failed us, your system protects
the cold, while we await what they do next
A boy looks away as he breaks into tears
A girl sheds a drop for one no longer here

That night we lost our angel, over at Stubbylee Park
The light that hope once gave has given way to burning dark
For those behind the hurting, no guilt and no repent
Sometimes only pain will help it end
That night we lost our angel, in a world that shouldn't be like this
Years of crime and hatred compensated for by benefits
We the people turn to finding happiness inside a dream
The world that you have given us can't give us what we need
Sometimes Only Pain Helps It End

Oh ignorant world, look upon my blood
I'm just a girl but my thread's being cut
Jesus, I know that I turned You down
But please come to me, 'cos I'm fading out
I'm fading to black

That night we lost our angel, over at Stubbylee Park
The light that hope once gave has given way to brutal dark
For those bereaved and hurting, no justice or relent
Sometimes only pain will help it end
That night we lost our angel in a world that simply cannot feel
But inside of this anguish there resides one feeling very real
We will not forget you for the flame you brought to us
This candle burns forever on inside our tortured hearts
We will thrash on down the hard road and along the bends
Sometimes only pain
Sometimes Only Pain Helps It End

I can't believe this happened to you
