Unknowing

by Thomas Pender   May 30, 2011

A child was told the stories of God
and listened with rising wonder
and the child questioned teachers
where is this great and wonderous God
that I may see and hear him
that I may be touched by him
how may I know what is said is true

The child went walking
nature glowed and split the day
The child whispered
God...will you speak with me
that I may hear you voice
And birdsong danced on the morning air
and the child did not hear

The child again walked
through the shadowed darks of evening
The child looked and murmered
God...will you let me see you
that I may know your beauty
And the Star of Evening shone crystal clear
but the child did not see

The child knelt with eyes hard closed
in a Cloister's sheltered garden
The child bowed and prayed
God...will you touch me
that I may feel your love
And a butterfly brushed the upturned face
but the child did not feel

The child spoke aloud at break of day
in the solitude of dawn light
The Child voiced an earnest plea
God will you show me a miracle!
that I may see your power
And a baby's cry echoed down the wind
but the child's ears were closed

And the child cried out in wild despair
that echoed down to adult days
The growing child questioned those he saw
where is this great and wonderous God
on these hard steps of life
and nature spread around the child
God guiding each and every step
