Beast

by Thomas Pender   May 30, 2011

We are ever eager to disown the rage
of the beast lodged deep within our souls
Uncontrolled by force of will it peers
toward the light with sly eyes
and glories in the measure of our crimes
crouching in our cage of cruelty

We strive for a freedom unbound
Enlightenment we say...sets us apart
To absolve ourselves of all deeds committed
Our clean hands washed but dripping
with the cold and unremembered blood
of a million million innocents

We ride to war on steeds of fire
Banners high ride the wind unfurled
For God we cry as we loose the sword
But God if he be there has turned away
while Kings and Priests hold the minds
of the vassels giving slaughter

and we may dream of nobler times
far from the many fields of hate and death
when love that much abused and brittle thing
shades the glowing eyes of that inner beast
At last perhaps we can live the lives
that creation's seed intended

but.........
I fear that time
may never be
