Soldier's Tales.....VI

by Thomas Pender   May 30, 2011

I then came to stand before them
those heroes of Crown and Kingdom
Eyes filled with a killing smoke
that fades now to cold embers
Where now the Glory
of the fields of sacred battle
where the broken ones now find rest
I stand at end of day
Waiting to see the old guard
march slowly into legend
down this road of blood and stone
And I will march in step
across this ancient pitted bridge
with the comrades of arms
On to the light last fading
Far beyond where Ravens dance
on pickings of the dead
Where wide eyed children wait
for the hard lagacy of blood
and the bereft women
eyes awash with bitter salted tears
walk in sorrow from small graves
There where the voices sing
a dirge of sad remembering
And I yearn for the sleep of peace
haunted by the dead no more
I will find at long road's end
a final moment of reaching
And here in the final time
I can at last stay my sword
to watch my seed enduring
This soldier's life is ended
