Skeptical Christian

Skeptical Christian
By Mark Spencer

I never was a faithful soul,
I followed many earthly goals.
I traveled roads of empty dreams,
Fueled by high and mighty schemes.

That's who I was; no need to hide.
I was a man puffed up with pride.
And that is who I'd be today,
Had God not come to block my way.

It started with an accident,
That summer of my discontent,
When stars aligned, and fates were sealed,
What once was veiled would be revealed.

A voice of warning set the stage,
It freed me from my gilded cage.
Events that day would humble me,
And for the first time, I could see.

God brought me to the brink of death,
Til' I was nearly out of breath.
But He was with me on that ride,
Had He not been, I would have died.

And though His presence was revealed,
No longer hidden or concealed,
Faith would find no home in me,
My doubting eyes still had to see.

So I set out upon this quest,
For years my spirit had no rest.
For my mind to be satisfied,
Sound logic had to be applied.

And when, at last, I saw the light,
My body tired, my heart contrite,
I did what many Christians do,
Believing I could now save you.

For I was special, after all,
I walked the walk, and heard the call.
But pride was driving me again,
Corrupting me, once more, with sin.

So I set out to teach mankind,
Writing the words within my mind,
Words I thought God had given me,
To share with you, through poetry.

But that's not how it all worked out,
God played a game of turnabout.
The lessons were all meant for me,
I still had much to learn, you see.

And to this day, there's more to learn,
More layers 'neath each page I turn.
I'm humbled by what I don't know,
I hope I never cease to grow.

So if you read my poetry,
The lessons God has shared with me,
I hope they help in some small way,
If just to brighten up your day.

They chronicle the path I've trod,
From skeptic to a man of God,
Everything He shared with me
Is found within my poetry.

    Wow, this was so alluring..
You really have a talent as you nail each idea you discuss..
"I never was a faithful soul,
    I followed many earthly goals.
I traveled roads of empty dreams,
Fueled by high and mighty schemes."
The opening was brilliant.. Up to the point,,, 'I followed many earthly goals..' - I wonder how much we do that per hour!

And it was epic the way you ended it:
"They chronicle the path I've trod,
From skeptic to a man of God,
    Everything He shared with me
Is found within my poetry. "

'From skeptic to a man of God' - Awesome conclusion! ..
Again, the rhyming and wording were flawless!
    SO MOVING!
