Her Constellations

by Melpomene   Jul 1, 2011

--For Nor.

She braids my hair
with history,

ribbon scrawled
with hieroglyphs and
eyelids hand painted -
only the finest
shade of sand.

We'd find landscapes
in each other,

Mine mapping
her homeland with
the constellations of
her freckles,

while she'd
conjure the Nile
into the crevices
of my palm.

I'd often find her -
head in books,

chastising my taste
of romance while
placing herself
amongst carriages,
ball gown beaded
with cinnamon and

wrist dining with
only the most elegant
of man.

She once told me
we were too old to jog,
and it was then
I imagined
a modern Hansel and
Gretel, or a
Gretel and Gretel

who would easily be
lured into a
gingerbread house
by the scent of
pumpkin pie.

Who knew she could
speak to me with
tongue in cheek,
spice on shoulders

and we'd have
yin and yang for
thumb prints.

`Didn't make the deadline for Britt's contest, but here is the poem anyway.

I don't know anyone of those who have commented thus far, or Nor for which this poem was intended, but I love this poem. It's sweet, descriptive, but most importantly, the words speak to me in a way I've not experienced in a while. Not since I first read Frost or Kerouac have I felt this kind of interest in a poet. It's brilliant, heartwarming and genious!

    Mel-boo..

    This poem...
    Screams NOR to volumes...
    The part about the hair..

I pictured both of you sitting
    Like sisters
    Playing with each others hair..
    giggling and eating cookies..

    I agree with nor,
    The part about 'landscapes'
Was without a doubt the best..
    Somehow,I imagined you
    painting a kangaroo for her,
While she described the history of the pyramids..
    Eh?..

This poem is so so so beautiful..

    Classy and elegant..
    Like the two of you..

And the part of 'gretel and gretel'
    A little too well thought!

    Amazing poem!
    Congratz on the win!!

This sounds SO much like Nor it tickles me. I love this poem! You've wrapped the essence of yourselves and your friendship so neatly around every word. I know you could probably have kept going for hours, but as is now this is absolutely gorgeous poetry.

I love the end of yin and yang for your thumb prints!! How creative and clever that is! I love, love, love this! You have such a creative brain in there, Mel. Beautiful!
