Shell

by Jessie   Sep 4, 2011

What happens when you are numb?
when life shreds every little hope out of you?
when you can no longer eat, breath
or shed a lost lonely tear?

pray for a morsel of feeling
anything shall suffice,
the delicate smell of a red rose
or the sight of crimson blood.

there is nothing but an empty shell,
all is taken away
in vain
of a life once lived.

guarded by ego, can only keep walking
unknown destination,
just keep on walking,
walking

smile at those who will never understand
empty inside and out,
for a soul has already been taken
there's no life without living

This piece oozed desperation and hopelessness. The read is made to feel so lost for the persona; made to feel how they do. It's made to sound all the more heartbreaking by the lines:

"there is nothing but an empty shell,
    all is taken away
    in vain
of a life once lived." -- We see that the persona's circumstances used to be so difference, which is what makes everything all the more sad.

    A beautiful piece, but tragic.
