A Father Saved His Son

by Shannon   Jun 23, 2004

A little boy lay on a hospital bed
His heart is much too weak
No one thinks he'll survive the night
His future is dark and bleak

The doctors don't know how to tell
His parents the boy might die
They can't explain the answers
To their questions of why

The doctor said, "We need a heart
And it'd be best if it was sooner
Or this young boy will die.
We really need a donor."

For days and weeks they waited
But no heart for them arrived
Crushing all the hopes and dreams
Of keeping him alive

One day his daddy sat alone
With a gun in his hand
Thinking about his family
Touching his wedding band

He whispered, "I love you
I'm sorry we have to part
My son I'm going to miss you
But you really need a heart."

Silent tears began to fall
As daddy raised his gun
He slowly pulled the trigger
So he could save his son
