The Clock

by Bobby   Oct 8, 2011

If one could turn back the clock,
Changing just a few minutes of one day.
Which hours would we go back to?
How would that change who we are today?
I think I would go back
to when I close my life like a steel door.
The moment it shattered
like glass hitting the floor.
Removing of the ringing
and grabbing the phone call.
Excited and happy to talk
And then the discovery of hearing
They were no longer there at all.
The bottles and bottles of booze
That were drank and drank.
Tearing up and ripping out all but one wall.
The one wall I kept up as I slid down not caring
As I spiraled out of control and deeply sank.
The better the liquor
The better the fun.
The cursing and the swearing
Didn't help the outcome.
The river of grief has many bends
With extremely deep spots.
Each in their own way
Like a boiling over cooking pot.
If your not careful the current
Will take you out very far.
Making the swim to return to the shore of life
Longer and very tiring not to mention at times bizarre.
I guess when it comes down to it all.
When you get to life's shore
Your so exhausted
One just wants to lie still or crawl.
Beaten, weary, and a very broken man.
Discovering God is the one who is still there
and has a better plan.
One day at a time, one step forward
and a deep breath.
You with His help slowly bring yourself off of the ground
Where you were already in a living death.
Knowing you can't turn back the clock
Or change just a few minutes of one day.
For those hours
Are who we are today

I really liked the title because though it might be simple it gave me, as the reader, a little idea what this poem might lead to and I was curious to find out whether I was right with my assumption. Though it may not seem like it, this poem flowed quite well and I like the way your poem developed, how you started at the clock and then described a situation more in detail and came back to the clock. The message is definately powerful and it was a pleasureable read.
