He Hasn't Dressed Up Since

by silvershoes   Oct 18, 2011

When I was 10, my pa
dressed as a green goblin in
a witch's hat.
Costume decked from head
to toe, a rubber mask and furry gloves
to match,
not an inch of his skin
could be seen.

He leaned in his chair
on the patio,
plastic pumpkin full of sweets
by his toes.

Just so, he began to snooze.

Up crept a school of
adolescent boys,
taking my dad to be decoration.
In conniving chortles, they
dug their greedy hands in
fists to grab more than their
fair share.

At this very moment, my pa awoke,
and this is what he said:
"Hey now boys, no more than one each."

You might imagine their surprise,
though my pa's surprise was greater!
Before they tore off like bats
out of hell,
one boy screamed, and can you believe?

Why, he kicked my dad square in the nuts.

I wanted to just leave one word " Amazing"
then I had to say, hilarious, but...must mention how "well worded" then how enjoyable. how creative, how warm, cute...enviable, and very cherish-able :D thank you for sharing such a sweet memory.

    I really loved this poem!!!

It is such a shame that we don't celebrate Halloween in Australia like they do in the states! I would love to go to the US during this time of year.

This poem makes me want to go even more now!!!

    A wonderful write!!!

    The ending was hillarious!

HAHA! I don't think I have ever actually laughed out loud from a poem until this one. I used to participate in a haunted house put on by my aunts, and one year I was dressed as a dummy (shut it) and was to sit still until people passed me. Let me tell ya, kids are violent. This cracked me up.
