Vengence

by Shannon Saxby   Nov 14, 2011

Emotions attack every inch of your body:
confusion, anger, disbelief.
White noise;
nothingness.
Bitterness stings the open wound
like the fist full of shard glass
used to punch a hole
through your heart.
Mottled cheeks parade
salty tears from bloodshot eyes.
Then, faster than you realize: it's gone
An eerie sense of calm settles,
flushing the burn of betrayal out.
Numbness creates a hum and
stretches over your core--a protective shield.
Fabricated approval
like the fake smile plastered to your face.
"They deserve each other"
through gritted teeth.
The inaudible giggle
at the knowledge your poker face hasn't played
its final hand.
