The Struggle

by Dawn   Feb 21, 2012

Memories still fresh in my mind, To Me your still where you've always been.
I can't quite understand, that things are now not how they seem
I'm still waiting for the next time I see your smile, yourself
Standing strong and full of health.
In my heart you were invincible, I took you for granted
Ignored all the opportunities, neglected the seeds that you planted
You were the strong one, brave and full of life
A grandmother, a mother, a friend, a wife.
I think about you often, a dream as clear as day
And it hurts to even remember, just why you went away
It took away your future, your laughter and your plans
We watched as you struggled,

Empty promises and reassurances, I held your hand so tight
Watching your hope fade away as you gave into the fight
I told you that I loved you, we both knew I was saying goodbye
Although in our hearts, we still wanted you to try.
I looked into your eyes; I saw a woman robbed of her body
Tired and frail, not an ounce of dignity
You deserved so much more; you still had so much more to do
we hadn't prepared ourselves for this, and neither had you
we watched as you struggled,

The time the call came, we just stood with no tears,
All dried out, our darkest fears
You were laid out before us, a sight we'd never forget
I held you by the hand, not ready to let go yet
So many things to say, so many words left unsaid
So many regrets and chances I didn't take spinning round my head
You watched as we struggled.

Triggers of your face, the back of someone's head
Thinking that I'd seen you, as I lay sleeping in my bed
The smell of your skin passing me by, the sound of your voice in the air
Dreams that made me believe you were there.
Tears that run empty, trying to be strong
A household of people, all coping wrong
The pieces of you, we'd never get back
You watched as we struggled.

  • You write with such emotion, its both beautiful and captivating, but also so very sad. I loved the whole piece especially certain parts of each verse but this extract really stood out:

You were the strong one, brave and full of life
    A grandmother, a mother, a friend, a wife.

I can relate to these lines so perfectly, though in a much different context.

We tend to not realise those we see as being (nearly) invincible, so strong can also be quite vulnerable and it tends to come as a shock and, in some instances, a let down. Though I hope this is not what you felt at all towards this woman.

A truly beautiful and touching piece, with nice rhyme, good word choice and a simplicity that suits the tone of the poem and makes it just that bit more complex or in-depth feeling(if you know what I mean).

Thank you for this amazing piece.
