Can We Pretend?

Please Vote and Leave Feedback, I find it very helpful. Thanks.

I ask of you one favor,
One simple, pure request
Can we pretend that we're alright,
And put this night to rest?

Can we turn back the clock, love,
At least for one more night
To when the world was in our hands
When days ahead were bright

Can we pretend we're happy
That nothing here has changed
Still you and I against the world,
We aren't yet estranged

Please unpack your suitcase dear,
Take off your coat and choose
To sit and have a drink with me
We don't have much to lose.

Forget about our troubles
Cast out all of our fears
Pretend that we still share the love
We've kept alive for years

The fire now burns low, dear,
The night is growing cold,
I have a proposition, love,
Just like the days of old.

Will you lie down here with me?
Prolong this pantomime?
Pretend that while you're here tonight,
You love me, one more time.

As we share this bed tonight,
And I fear for the dawn
Pretend with me that when day breaks...
Pretend you won't be gone.

The light creeps through the window,
I find that I'm alone
I hold your pillow close to me
How cold this room has grown...

I let my tears fall freely
My heart craves what I lack
I can pretend, but I still know
You're never coming back.

One of the best I've read in a long time. The flow of the poem is simple and easy to read that I had to go back and read it a second time. As stated by the poets who commented on the poem before me, many can relate to this situation and you've portrayed it in a beautiful, yet sad way. Keep up the good work! 5/5

Powerful and heart wrenching. When reality finally grips the heart it's hard to adjust, but then I guess it's the key to move on.

You wrote this with such realism that the reader felt the emotional pangs, the pleading and hopefulness that lingers in the heart..
    excellent
